This beer name seems to be a lot more common than I initially considered. I mean, it's a good pun, but there are at least several other brews called Bramble On... huh. The more you know, I guess. Anyhow, this is Ipswich's new kettle-sour brewed with blackberry puree. I actually missed out on Cranberry Beret, their previous fruited sour, but I'm early on the boat for this one. Let's get right into it, then...
Pours a beautiful, expressive, deep crimson red color with a surprisingly fluffy and meringue-like head that actually seems to hold on for a very decent amount of time. Quite nice looking, especially that color. No clarity to speak of here, but it's just translucent enough that holding it up to light brings out some lighter, ruby-red overtones. Still impressed the head is sticking around this long, as I always am with quick-sours. Small additional pours build up some more foam each time, though I can seem to detect it fading away quicker with each subsequent pour, as well.
Nose has, of course, jammy blackberry but there are subtle notes of raspberry, strawberry and rhubarb in there as well. Kind of a leafy and "green" note underneath all the fruit. Wheat malt and lemon follow up with a one-two punch in the smell, alongside some surprising adjunct citrus notes like orange and lime. Very excited to try this one.
Sweet and jammy upfront with a light kiss of wheat malt and some tart, balancing acidity toward the back of the palate. The citrus from the nose comes across here... I actually pick up orange and grapefruit alongside the deeper, darker berry tones. Raspberry sorbet and blackberry preserves present big time here, with a good twang of lacto acidity rounding everything out. It's not the most complex or most sour of the fruited quick-sour beers I've had lately, but it's perfectly satisfactory for the style.
Feel is a little on the heavier side for the style and the beer clocks in at 5% ABV. The slightly-syrupy mouthfeel gives me the impression of a classic Berliner weissbier with something akin to a blackberry version of the traditional syrup added in. The fruit syrup used historically to temper the strong acidity of the base beer, and I feel like that is pretty relevant here, as I think there's a balance that works quite well with this brew. This is tart, fruity, refreshing and still, at the end of the day, very much a "beer." Recommended.
