usually we tend to associate color with the roastiness of a beer, and for good reason. the correlation is usually very strong, the darker the beer, generally speaking, the more roasted barley profile you get in the taste. not always a linear relationship, but the association is good. in this case, i was amazed at the deep roasted grain flavors coming through a beer that isnt even quite chestnut in color, looking more like a copper ale than a brown, clear too. however, they have somehow managed to get a lot of the toasted and even almost grilled flavors into this beer to balance the crystal malt sweetness it has in the middle. impressive! nutty in the traditional sense, hopped minimally, and without much yeast flavor to it, quite well refined if a little simplistic. a tad light in body for the style and the season, but for those who like a bit of a darker beer all year, this is a great choice. well enough carbonated, and a fine companion to a whole range of autumn foods. i have been back and forth on angry hanks beer, but this is a solid offering. true to style with a mark of originality.
