Carolina Brewery's version of the maibock pours a dark amber with deep-red highlights; the creamy, off-white head is certainly short-lived. Aromas of toasted malts and mild spices waft up from the surface of the brew. The flavor is quite malty with hints of spices, but it seems more akin to a strong amber ale than a true maibock. The lingering aftertaste is malty, and hops are set back a bit to provide just a bit of bitterness at the very end. It's clean and refreshing, and there some nice, nattering notes of nuts in the malty aftertaste.
