No package date but lots of stuff to read on the can label that is a beer colored backdrop for silhouettes of folks in the Chatham brew pub for whom this beer is made.
Brewed with Simcoe, Amarillo and Centennial hops, specialty malts in a "balanced west coast meets east coast IPA" yada yada ...
It claims to be "lightly hazy" which I don't see in my glass, at least not 'till I dumped the last dribbles in.
Anyway, pretty to look at, clear, medium amber, nice, persistent off-white head, specks of lace.
The aroma is indeed well balanced - hefty caramel malt in harmony with hops scents of orange marmalade and spruce tips.
Up front, flavors of honey and over ripe melon are quickly over run by strong hop acids and deep bitterness - truly heavy handed, old school west coast boil hop character though it does have a metallic tang and is highly carbonated for style. As over the top as the hop rate is, the malt body hangs tough and the 7% abv punches above it's weight.
The finish is bitter and peppery with a tongue tingling tartness and a warm tickle of alcohol in the throat.
A head kicked up easily even at the end as the malt sugars come forward as it warms.
A solid IPA but maybe too much for the "hazy / juicy" and soft "IPA" crowd.
This one ain't soft kids.
