On this day, 01OCT09, I did some sightseeing in Augsburg and then took a day-trip to München for some more Festing. Upon my return in the early eve, I was looking for some dinner. Having already tried Thorbräu, König Von Flandern was next on my list of new places to try.
Found in a multi-story building near the center of Augsburg, this brewpub is a bit easy to miss. Though there is a small sign hanging from the building, the main, large sign here is for a book store. There's an entrance with a stairway leading down into the cellar-based pub, but the bookstore is on both left and right sides of this entrance. So, just go straight down the stairs, under the sign proclaiming "Gasthaus-Brauerei". You first enter a small foyer displaying bier, souvenirs, paraphernalia, etc. Straight through and you're in! Directly ahead is a small table for stand-up quaffing and then the service bar. Shelves above it hold old steins and new growlers. To your left and behind is one of many dining rooms. Dark-wood tables and chairs, white walls with old paintings, bricked, arched ceilings, and chandeliers make for an interesting place to dine. To the right of the service bar, a short stairway on the right leads down to a lounge type area. There is more modern decor here, with some long, biergarten-like benches and tables. Back near the entrance, if you take a right turn, you'll see some copper brew kettles. Whether they're in use or for show, I'm not sure. Around to the right-rear gets you to another old-style, traditional pair of rooms. The first, immediate area has light wood paneling about 1/2 way up leading to light painted walls. More old brewing equipment, mugs and paintings give the place old-world ambience. There are many small, island-type tables adjutting from the walls, with room for 2 or 3 people each. The last room, to the rear right, has dark wood paneling surrounding light-wooded and worn tables and chairs. The walls are flesh-colored and lead to vaulted ceilings. Incandescent-lighting chandeliers give off a warm glow, and there are many arrangements comprised of hops adding to the atmosphere.
The service was very good here, with many a lovely Fraulein schlepping bier and food here and there in a timely fashion. My server on this first visit, Janine, was the epitome of friendly, efficient service. Clone her, please!!
On tap this day were 4 König biers: hell, dunkel, hefeweizen and doppelbock. I had numerous glasses of their Alligator Doppelbock, which was quite nice. Monday to Friday from 4 to 6PM is their "happy hour", where the typical 0.3l glass of bier costs 1EU less. Food? I had a wonderful serving of Käsespätzle mit Salat, and it was top-shelf. I would highly recommend a visit to König Von Flandern if you're in Augsburg. Prosit!!
