Copenhagen 17/4 2016. 50 cl bottle from Netto. Another feature in Midtfyns inexhaustible Chili beer series. This time mentoning the Youtube celebrity Chili Klaus who makes people eat chili and choke on it while filming it.
Pours hazy orange with a white head. The head disappears immediately after pouring it. No lacing.
Aroma is fruity sweet and lemonadelike with some tart notes. Not much chili smell here.
Prickly carbonation and slightly thick palate. Lively texture.
Flavor is sweet followed by a quite intense burning sensation from the chili. One of the stronger chili beers I’ve tasted. The burning sensation lingers in the aftertaste. You almost forget that this beer holds an ABV of 9,2 %.
I did not choke on it - but it made my nose run. I am afraid that’s not worth making a film about on YouTube.

330 ml bottle, Cardinal OPub & Bar, Stavanger, ABV is 9.2%. Slightly hazy deep golden to orange colour, small and thin white head. Aroma of sweetish malts, marmalade and chili. The flavour is medium sweet and malty with some fruit, easy drinking first, then a vehement burn of ghost chili sets in, and lasts through the long aftertaste.

Look: Pours a hazy amber and forms a body of the same. No head to speak of, but tiny bubbles from the bottom of the glass rise straight to the surface.
Smell: Muted sweetness (honey, spun sugar, slight floral notes (from the chili?)), slight yeastiness. Not unpleasant, but less than what I had hoped.
Taste: Very sweet up front with sugar notes and candied apple, heat rises swiftly from the back of the throat along with a mild vegetable taste and more sweetness. Heat keeps it from being cloying.
Feel: Medium body with minimal carbonation, would be slightly oily if not for the heat brightening the palate.
Overall: A good beer if one enjoys chili ales without too much bite, but don't expect anything extraordinary.

i have had this one awhile, so i think some of the chili must have faded, but this was still a neat beer to try, although definitely one to share among friends. i really did expect it to be much hotter than it is on the chili, ghost peppers, i remember the video of this chili klaus guy eating one, and he, the king of hot stuff, almost died, so i was intimidated. you cant even hardly smell the peppers through the yeasty thick strong beer. notes of honey and stale yeast instead, i definitely let this one sit a little long. the flavor is sweet and boozy, the pepper doesnt come on until really late, and there its a very slow incline of heat ramping up. i get the flavor of the pepper for sure, but all the heat is in the throat and not on the tongue, which i kind of appreciate. it doesnt even actually last all that long. they were smart to use it in a stronger sweeter beer, there is actually good flavor here, and the body and residual sugar balances the pepper out real well. id have to try this fresh to get a better feel for the intensity of the hot pepper i think, but this was still a fun one...

Supposedly named for the chili that its brewed with, "ghost" however holds a second meaning with this beer. At the start it looks, smells, and tastes like a normal IPA. After swallowing however, the chili ghost appears with avegence. Where a strong somewhat bitter aftertaste is expected, instead a sharp spiciness comes from the back of the throat and out. The surprise is enticing but by no means overwhelming. Might be hard to get through more than a couple in one sitting, but overall Chili Klaus Ghost is a welcome change to a delicious classic.
