2010: 500 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. ABV is 5.2%. The brewers call this a "dark ale", not an IPA. The brewery website says the beer has been fermented and matured with fresh beech branches, while the bottle label says it has been brewed with oak and beech extract. Ingredients also include glucose syrup. Hm. Reddish amber colour, big off-white head. Nice aroma of fruity Cascade hops, just a hint of wood, smoke and syrup. The flavour is sweet and malty, the glucose syrup also has a distinct presence, but the beer is not quite sweet enough to be "cloying". Also notes of wood, hints of smoke. Noticeable hops in the finish. An unusual beer, might be called "interesting".

Appearance: Brown-reddish body, brown thick head, with slow dissipation; looks rich and frothy.
Smell: Smell of malts, alcohol, musty…
Taste: Semi-sweet with an undercurrent of roughness / dryness, like that of a pale ale. Some traces of bitterness on and off.
Mouthfeel: Full body, medium carbonation, mellow, syrupy.
Overall/Drinkability: an OK beer; a bit more sweet than I’d prefer but can be nicely paired with a rich-sauce food.

Poured from a .5L bottle.

A - Poured dark red-brown, short head that dissipated quickly

S - Malty, sugary notes

T - Dark roasted grains, earthy woody notes, a bit of brown sugar, and a sharp hoppy finish

M - Medium carbonation, light body; not too watery, but on the lighter side

O - The beech flavour wasn't largely evident, but there was the earthy notes, which were a nice background element. Taking this as a brown ale, with a hint of some wood notes, this was pretty nice. Just don't expect too much complexity here.

A: Color is clear copper while the lovely compact and thick head is than. Slow dissipation leaves decent lacings.

S: Dark malts, with lots of dark dried fruits, very sweet. Almost nothing else.

T: Still very sweet and rich in malts. Dark dried fruits. Perhaps a hint of mint!? Chocolate and bread. Almost no trace of American hops.

M: Rather bitter aftertaste after a really long time, at first the aftertaste is very sweet. Body is on the milder side for this style. Carbonation is very mild - the beer feels rather flat.

O: Not a bad beer, but not very American.
