Provided by Hopsolutely in the ultimate beer care package every conceived. Cheers guys!

From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
Bottled 12 July 2013

APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour yields a one finger, medium looking, bubbly, light tan head with very good retention. Transparent black body with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a bubbly wisp and ring. A ring remains until the end but leaves no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Lots of barrel on the nose. Whisky or wine notes perhaps, tart aromas of cherries and wood, some milk chocolate with hints of leather as well. Fun, though the tartness wasn’t expected.

TASTE: Whisky, some vanilla and wood flavors up front, then some slightly tart cherries at the swallow. Bolder and lingering aftertaste of whisky barrel, oak, some red wine flavors and tart berries as well. Alcohol lingers on the palate as a final act. Some notes of chocolate add a bit of bitterness rounding it out. Rather well balanced, though the tartness is odd.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with enough weight and medium levels of carbonation. Not quite creamy enough, a bit slick as well, goes down fine with a bit of a bite and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Some heat and burn lingers.

OVERALL: Okay here. Interesting beer, making this hard to score, but it’s just not quite right. Not sure what barrels were used, but there is definitely a tart character here for sure, making it a bit awkward. There is a combination of whisky barrel flavors but the tartness, as long as it is a product of the barrel aging and not something else, suggests red wine barrels were used somewhere in the process. In any case, I’m not sure if this is exactly what they were shooting for. Interesting and drinkable, but not all that satisfying for the style. Something I’d want to try again, but not this batch. Thanks again Hopsolutely!

Pours a dark liquorice and raises a tan coloured head that dissipates quite rapidly. Aromas of chocolates, light wood, barley candy. Mouthfeel is on the heavier side, but oily texture makes it feel thinner than it is. Alcoholic body that raises interesting flavours until the barrel-acidity kicks in. Kind of an awkward mix between bitter chocolates and light coffee acidity, and an odd green barrel flavour that deters a bit. You get used to it as it warms up, and after a bit it just stays as a light tinge in the aftertaste. This keeps it from being real good. Finish is dry and sticky. Not bad. But the barrel aging is missing some spirit and vanillin to make it pop.
