A 330ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2018. Acquired a little while back from the Brewdog webshop. As the name suggests, this is a black IPA with rye in the malt bill. Hopped with Columbus, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe and Citra.
A: Poured into an IPA glass. A very dark brown hue that appears almost black in the glass. Yields a huge head of creamy tan foam with good retention; this slowly reduces to a persistent surface layer. Some lacing.
S: Aroma of resinous hops with hints of pine, sticky weed, citrus, peel, caramel malt, spicy rye, grain, ale yeast and mild stewed hops. Great malt presence and lovely balance - fantastic.
T: Tastes of bitter aromatic hops with notes of pine resin, dank weed, grapefruit, citrus, peel, herbs, caramel malt, grainy rye, subtle spice, ale yeast and stewed hops. Slightly sweet, followed by a strident hop-driven bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with moderate carbonation and good body. Some light hop oil action on the palate. Aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops, pine resin, weed, citrus, caramel malt, rye and ale yeast.
O: Excellent - a solid black IPA with a malty twist. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour are a top-notch mix of resinous hops, caramel malt, rye and yeast. Nice body, thick but not excessive. Goes down a treat; I suspect that this beer evolved into the subsequently released Slot Machine (which is also superb).
