Paradox Middle West is the latest in the BrewDog Barrel-Aged Series. The series showcases one-off beers, brewed and blended with heart and soul. Aging in cask imparts a range of flavors derived from the casks' previous inhabitants. Each release is unique, and only brewed once.

This super small batch imperial stout has been resting in straight wheated bourbon casks from Middle West Spirits for seven months (or 212 days for those keeping count). Paradox Middle West showcases the incredible depth one can draw from the symbiosis of liquid and wood, with the spirit of oak unfolding on the palate.

At 14.0% ABV it is a decadent and complex brew; chocolate and coconut notes combine a lasting vanilla character, all resting on a solid oak stage. Pouring like Indian ink, it clings to the glass, delivering a chewy and full-bodied mouthfeel.

Decanted from a 16 oz (473 ml) can into a snifter glass; canned 08/05/20.
A: Pours a very dark brown to black with minimal, tan head formation leaving a rim and spidery lacing.
S: Aromas of whiskey/bourbon, molasses, and vanilla predominate. No more than a cocoa note.
T: Sweet. Flavors follow the nose with a lot of molasses and booziness. Strong and overly lasting bitterness, stays on your palate like pepper.
F: Full bodied with no more than modest carbonation. Alcohol burn very evident.
O: I really thought this had a lot of the flavor characteristics of a barley wine, but far, far more bitter than anything that has aged. Too boozy, too bitter, too devoid of other interesting flavors. Not bad, but doesn't quite mesh.

From the tall boy can in a snifter via Bluejacket74----Cheers Dude---This one is special!
This monster pours a dark coal black with a nice head of brown foam that settles
to a thick, fine beaded ring, thick fine bead layer, and sports some excellent
lacing. Nose of rich bourbon, nice oak, vanilla, coffee, char, dark bakers chocolate,
and dark fruit notes of black and blueberries. Flavors hit the mark! Dark fruit
glides through dark bakers chocolate, dark coffee, rich bourbon, toffee, char, brulee,
definite blueberry and blackberry touches, rich oak, excellent vanilla, and
warming lightly astringent booze. Nice mouth feel; full body, light carbonation,
smooth as silk, rich, coating, did I mention smooth (?!?), and finishing
with a warming bourbon and bitter malt finish.

Overall.......WOW.....what a fantastic brew from an excellent brewery!

Cheers and thanks again Bluejacket74...this is beyond compare!

16 ounce can, canned on 08/05/20, BrewDog USA brewed. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, burnt/charred malt, dark chocolate, licorice, oak and coconut. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some dark fruit and dark bready flavors. Good amount of barrel character, seems to me the burnt/bitter aspects of the stout stand out more than the sweeter ones Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit syrupy and has a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good barrel aged stout, definitely worth trying if you get the chance to.
