a black ipa for warm weather, lighter in abv, body, and bitterness than is standard in the style, at least in the northwest where they tend to run into the 7% abv range anyway. this i believe was brewed at the vegas location where we had it on tap on the roof top, hence the name i think. solid beers here, dont sleep on this place as a brewery. for sure more brown than black, almost more red than brown even, garnet in the light, with a condensed near inch of deep tan foam with nice staying power. to me it smells and tastes almost more like a hoppy brown, the chocolate malt aspect is there, a hint of coffee on the low end too, more of that when it first comes to the table and is frosty cold, its lost to the hops a bit as this warms, but what its missing is that deeper roast character at its foundation, that bitter dark barley presence, subtle if anything there. the hops are great though, fresh for one, resinous on the palate, with notes of bitter citrus pith and fresh pine, could be simcoe leading, but there is some sweetness in the center and even a hint of smoke so specific hop varietals are not showing obviously. i love the lighter body, this is definitely a pint beer, a nice change of speed for the style i reckon, and its quite well made, the balance is there even without the more intense roasted grain, and the hops pair well with the malts that are here. slightly oily, mid body, fine carbonation, a little weedy, a textural softness, faintly bitter aftertaste. nice with spicy food, solid summertime take on this style.
