Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color with a one finger head of creamy tan colored foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a lighter level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is light overall with it being strongest of a roasted malt smell mixed with aromas of chocolate and some caramel. Along with these aromas are some lighter notes of a coconut and some light coffee smells.
Taste – The taste begins with a slightly caramel and chocolate sweetened flavor that has a light showing of sweet coconut crème. As the taste advances the coconut fades a bit with a little more caramel taking its place. The flavor takes on more bitterness and roast with some toasted nut flavors developing at the end, leaving one with a slightly coconut flavored nut brown ale flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is somewhat thin for its abv. with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the style a thicker body and slightly lower carbonation would have been better, likely accentuating the light coconut and the sweeter porter/nut brown flavors better.
Overall – An alright brew overall. I was hoping for something with a bit more intensity in coconut, a little more roast, and a thicker and chewier body. A decent one to try, but not one I will necessarily miss once gone from the tap list.
