every time i come in here to carters i am just so impressed on the overall quality of the beers, and that was the case again this time. this brown ale is excellent, albeit rather light as the style goes, almost more reddish than brown in the glass, some mahogany richness to it, but thinner looking than most. its really coffee forward in the nose though, lots of cocoa to it, less roasted bitterness than anticipated for its intensity, for me its almost a slightly sweetened coffee thing, mocha more than straight espresso or something, warming and appealing, especially with the caramel elements in the malt. the flavor is great, coffee in the drivers seat all the way through, some nuttiness to it, chestnut and almond there, a soft brown sugar sweetness through the whole thing, and more chocolate character in the coffee. i think i like the lighter base beer, the coffee stands out through it uniquely and the whole thing drinks light for what it is, but never sacrifices any flavor. relaxed carbonation, maybe a light english vibe to it overall, and the complex coffee through the finish. really tasty stuff, nicely done, excellent cold weather brew!
