Got this on sale at Randall's North County. 4-pack cans. $7.00 "Canned on 3/10/16"

Nice appearance: what I expect for a Belgian Dark Strong.

Great aroma: alcohol and dark fruits

Nice mouthfeel.

Taste: Like any good dark strong it has a nice Belgian yeast flavor, including dark fruits, with a bit of extra sweetness. Very smooth and well balanced.

Overall a great beer. I am surprised this beer is not more highly rated. Perhaps, because it has benefited from aging: it has nearly 18 months of age on it. Too bad it is discontinued.

From a 12 ounce can, this brew is a deep rust colored brew with an off white head. The aroma is Belgian in character...sugar and malt, with phenols. The taste is peppery, with a candy-like undertone. I didn't get the salt and caramel that was noted...at first. However, a bit of saltiness comes out after a number of sips. The caramel flavor takes a backseat to the Belgian notes. Full in body with a lingering spice finish. Okay.

Pours a very effervescent & chill-hazed dirty brown. Viscous look, zero head retention & lacing

S: Slight brown sugar & booze

T: Brown sugar & salt & dryness up front, a little Brown Bread with faint earthy yeastyness with a little mushroom thrown in. Brown sugar, salt & dryness as this warms. Finishes salty with caramel & a little brown sugar

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation

An interesting beer, just doesn't quite deliver. ABV is well hidden. Worth a try, but nothing world changing here

Amber in color with a fingernail of beige around the rim. Aroma is of sweet brown sugar and caramel. I taste dark malt, brown sugar, caramel, and salt. The mouth is lightly chewy.

Poured a clear, brown color with a small light brown head of foam. It smelled of caramel and sweet malt. I really didn't taste the salted caramel. It seemed to just be a boozy Belgian-style ale.

Taste: sweet and salty caramel, brown sugar, bready malt with a kick to the finish. Same with the nose but milder. Dark honey/copper hue, Opaque, with tan foamy head. Medium body. Not super sweet. 30 IBUs

Poured into a St. Bernardus goblet.

Look: A really beautiful ruby colored body with a cream colored head that recedes to a collar around the edges. No lacing.

Aroma: Belgian yeast immediately, cinnamon, brown sugar.

Taste: Very much like the aroma. Starts out with some cinnamon spiciness and alcoholic heat before a massive wallop of Belgian yeast comes in. Brown sugar plays its part, but this isn't really what I consider a sweet beer. The finish is spicy and hot.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, burns going down.

Overall: I didn't notice any salt, the brown sugar was there but not dominant. I got more cinnamon and Belgian yeast than anything. Not a bad beer for Christmas time.

While its deep amber color and reddish tint put it at the lighter end of the color spectrum in terms of the style, Sweet Tooth makes for an attractive pour with admirable head retention. The aroma says Belgian, too, with sweetness, a touch of fig/date and soft baking spices on the nose. Could that be a tickle of salt as well, or is the packaging asserting its power of suggestion? Either way, this Belgian Strong Dark Ale lacks some of the complexity of its peers. Full-bodied with a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, this beer deftly hides its alcohol content, but gets in its own way when it comes to taste. Malty and medium-dry, it doesn't quite succeed as a playful dessert drink or a Trappist/Abbey ale. The word muddled comes to mind. A sweet, salted caramel flavor does emerge in the finish though, followed by a relatively high level of woody, tannic bitterness that seems out of place. Creative, yet confused.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. About a finger of off white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A sweet and spicy Belgian style aroma with aroma with a scent of caramel malt sweetness and spices. Belgian yeast with a scent of clove, pepper, and cinnamon. Toasted malt with a scent of caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, and cracker. Sweet scent of brown sugar along with some salt hints. Dark fruit hints of fig, raisin, and dates. A pretty solid sweet and spicy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a sweet and spicy Belgian style taste with notes of sweet caramel, spices, and dark fruit. Belgian yeast with notes of cinnamon, pepper, and clove spicing. Toasted malt with notes of caramel, toffee, grains, biscuit, oats, and cracker. Sweet taste of brown sugar. Salt is subtle. Dark fruit notes of raisin, fig, and dates. A very good sweet and toasty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and somewhat sticky. Alcohol is masked well.

Overall: A pretty good take on a Dark Belgian Ale. Good caramel and brown sugar sweetness with the cinnamon spice and dark fruit. Avoids becoming overly cloying.

interesting beer right here, loosely belgian with a few modern twists. the malt is very light, definitely supplemented heavily by the brown sugar in this, i can feel its raw cane on my palate right away, sweet but not as offensive there as anticipated, and with some other unique features. the yeast is belgian in nature for sure, hints of bubblegum and saltwater taffy in the flavor, slight fruity aspects come out, dried apricot maybe, a little spice, and then its oddly bitter with all the sugar at the end, mineral laden and heavy. very weird flavor profile here in the finish, not sure i really dig it all that much, but it is unique to say the least. i was hoping for a little more out of this one, it ends up being somewhat different, but also rather underwhelming, a little bit all over the place and messy. i like the yeast, but too much sugar in it, and at such an absurdly high abv for what it is, this is a recipe for one killer hangover. nice to try it, tallgrass has launched the colorado market with tons of products which is cool, but i wont go back for more of this anytime soon...
