Brewery notes: The Flyin’ Hawaiian is brewed with Columbus, Mandarina Bavaria, Pacific Gem and Falconer’s Flight hops, creating a tasty interplay between earthy and pine notes with citrus, dark berries and tropical fruit. A burst of fresh pineapple post-fermentation enhances the hops with an extra layer of tropical flavors, while the simple malt bill allows the hops to shine.

Medium in the iPA, flower front, almost a liquor after taste. . . Smooth-ish

Taste Rating in Words: Tastes like a luau, there's water flying beer and liquor intermingling.

Poured into a snifter. Moderately hazy with an amber-orange hue. A thick and rocky off-white head with nice retention and sturdy lacing. Not surprisingly, pineapple on the nose with orange, mango, and some caramel malt. A bit of pine. Pineapple up front but not overwhelming; definitely citrusy hops but balanced with pine. Slightly sweet malt backbone but a bit thin on the body. Warm on the finish and slightly boozy.

16 oz can. Pours a cloudy golden color with a small white head. Mild sweet hop and malty aroma. Really mellow. The flavor is resin and piney hops, moderate bitterness, dryness and malt. Very sweet ans smooth. Not bad.

From a 16 ounce can, this brew had an amber-golden complexion, clear, with a white head that leaves beautiful tufts of lace. The aroma is understandably fruity, pineapple, but also (I swear) some peach juice. The taste is boozy, warming, and sweet. Spice lays underneath. Full in body and lots of pineapple in the finish. Somewhat acidic. I don't think I could have more than one of these.

Light copper in color with 2 inches of creamy dense brown head on top. Light lacing. I'm smelling a bit of freshly cut acidic pineapple and not much else. I'm tasting some light malt, pineapple, and some faint citrus hops. The mouth is lightly gritty, sticky, and resinous.

The can art is neat. That's about the end of the positives. Let's break the mold and start with the taste, way too sweet, like pineapple curd in a malty ipa: caramel and pine didn't help with this. Feel is cloyingly sweet and syrupy. The smell is nice and pineapple centric, but again leans sweet despite decent hop presence. Cloudy yellow body with tons of fizzy foam. Pass

Poured from a 16 oz. can into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger white head which slowly settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A ripe and juicy hop driven aroma with a scent of tropical fruit and pine. Upfront citrus hop scent of grapefruit, orange peel, melon, and lemon with some pineapple. Hints of piney and grassy hops. Light pale malt hints of caramel and cracker with yeast. A pretty nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a ripe and juicy hop driven taste with notes of tropical fruit and pine. Juicy citrus hop notes of orange peel, grapefruit, lemon, and melon along with some notes of pineapple. Earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass. Background malt notes of caramel, grains, and cracker along with some yeast. A solid juicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Juicy, oily, and drying.

Overall: A pretty good Imperial IPA. Nice tropical and piney hop bite.

A - Golden orange, clear body, full white head, lots of lacing.

S - Mild fruit notes, and a lot of hop, pine, a bit of wildness.

T - Follows that nose, with a big moderately sweet juiciness in the middle, particularly as it warms, and a subdued bitter bite in the close. The pineapple is most present in the long fade, where the clearest hint of pineapple flesh comes forward.

M - Pretty clean, full, and mildly dry close, that gets more spiky as it warms up.

O - I like this one, with good fruit notes, solid bitterness.

16oz can. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of pineapple, orange peel and toasted caramel. Strong pineapple taste with sweet caramel and a bitter bite.

I'm a big Double IPA fan and I had this during their brewery tour in Manhattan. I usually do not like fruit infused beer (or at least I'd never buy it at the liquor store). This beer does not fall in that category. It is a very solid Double IPA with a smooth finish and only a slight undertone of pineapple, which I appreciated. It added a little something extra for taste but didn't overpower the beer. I was very impressed. Tallgrass has other great beers in 8-Bit, 16-Bit, Top Rope IPA, and Songbird Saison but this one may top those. Great beer!

16 oz can poured into shaker pint "Drink by 01/28/17

Pours out a perfect golden color with a fluffy 2" of white foam. There is almost nothing in the nose that leads me to think of this as an IPA or DIPA, kolsch maybe. I also got zero of the advertised pineapple. Cracker, grass, orange rind, and a bit of lingering bitterness. Drinkable, but not a great representation of the style.

Golden clear pour, big head and barely any visible carbonation. Head settles pretty quickly.
Smells like malts and tropical fruit/ pineapple with some fresh pine notes.
Up front this tastes big with malt and heavy on the wood and pine/ pineapple. The woody malts outshine the fruit in this beer, but it is tasty/ interesting enough.
Feels thick and somewhat chewy, full and very nice here. More grounded minerals than tropical fruit. Interesting though.
Even though it's just under 8.5 abv., this somehow drinks like a beer that's in the 9.5-10.5 abv. range. It's sharp and bitter.
The mouthfeel is worth it for me to where I'd try it again. The longer I sip it, the more complex it seems even though the pineapple presence is hidden and far from "juicy." I find myself searching for the flavor in each sip, yet enjoy each sip even more than the last. Whatever. Odd. Not bad.

Poured into a Tallgrass tumbler glass.

Look: Semi-clear light burnt orange body under a soapy, thick cream colored head. Nice bubbly bands of lacing.

Aroma: Heavy clean wood notes, light citrus, some spiciness. Subtle on the pineapple, barely detectable.

Taste: Thick syrupy malts up front with spicy cedar woodiness, pineapple and orange zest, with a bitter, sharp finish.

Mouthfeel: Thick, but fairly smooth.

Overall: Where's the pineapple? Very subtle, there is more in the taste than the aroma, but I could barely get the idea that was to be had with this one.
