There was a pirate brewer named Jacques
To see his face was a shock
He had only one eye
A blunt wooden thigh
And brew of the finest stock

Belgian-style Stout

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A roasty and rich dark malt driven aroma with a scent of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, smoke, biscuit, grains, caramel, and nuts. Belgian yeast with hints of pepper, clove, and burnt candied sugar. Dark fruit hints of fig, raisin, and dates. Subtle earthy hop hints. A very nice roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and rich dark malt driven taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, toast, caramel, biscuit, grains, and nuts. Belgian yeast with notes of pepper, clove, and burnt candied sugar sweetness. Dark fruit notes of raisin, fig, and dates. Light earthy hop bitterness. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Fairly chewy and drying. Minimal alcohol heat.

Overall: A very good Belgian style twist on an Imperial Stout. Good roasty chocolate and coffee notes with a touch of Belgian yeast and dark fruit.

L: Black body with a dense tan head. Very good retention.

S: Very sweet, roasted grain, banana, chocolate

T: Burnt malt, dark chocolate, banana candy, little bit of alcohol and smoke.

F: Medium to full body, creamy.

O: Interesting cross between a Belgian ale and a stout. I really like it, but it probably isn't for everyone. A dessert beer for sure, it's very sweet.

16oz can, dated 4/7/17. Pours hazy brown with a medium sized light khaki head; some lacing. Smells of roasted malt, fruity hops, banana, licorice, spice, and caramel. The taste follows with roasted malt, banana, licorice, and dark fruit. Lots of dryness and medium sweetness. Some alcohol comes though. Somewhat thin body and average carbonation. Overall, it's too strange of a flavor combination to be enjoyable. Needs some reworking.

Poured a jet-black color with a small, brown head of foam. It smelled of sweet toffee and chocolate. Tasted of sweet candy sugar, chocolate and toffee. Pretty sweet with minimal bitterness.

There is something about this yeast that just doesn't blend well for a stout IMHO. This look good with a black body & dark head. The aroma is not right for me either. Again the blending of the spiciness with the dark malts just doesn't work. Its not that pleasing. Body is good. So is the feel. Not flawed just not that enjoyable.

Aroma is toffee/caramel, roasted/slightly burnt malts and a hint of earthiness. The flavor is toffee, medium sweetness and a mix of mild acidity and big caramel sweetness in the finish.

Pours coffee-black, forms a nice, but short-lived head. Leaves a nice lace. Smells of rich, dark malt, and alcohol. Feels fairly creamy and rich. Tastes of rich, dark, toasty malt. Hints of coffee, chocolate, possibly hazelnuts. Hoppy bitterness comes through on the finish. A great toasty, rich, stout!

From a tall can, this brew is utterly black...no light penetrates the liquid. The head is the color of chocolate milk and leaves great lace. The aroma is roasted with a bit of black currant fruit notes. Nice bitterness and extremely roasted grain notes in the taste...a little heavily roasted malt. Slight smoke notes. Full in body and a little warmth. This is a complex and interesting beer. Better than expected.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 3 fingers of caramel colored head. Nice lacing & very good head retention

S: Carob, faint roasty grain.

T: Roasty grain, a little bit of banana taffy, a little smokeyness up front. More carob, a little black currant, roastynesss & more taffy as this warms. Finishes with a little green banana, some carob, & alittle smokeyness, just a kiss of booze too. Almost like a dysfuctional milkshake

MF: Medium body, light carbonation

Drinks easy for the ABV, but just doesn't reach me, worth a try though
