Our cryo dry hopped Imperial Black IPA is brewed with classic NW hops that lend it citrusy, resinous pine flavors that marry caramel, chocolatey malts with just a hint of roast.

Rated 10/23/2020. This is a really good beer. It has a nice dark brown color and medium head on the pour. Most of the beers from Hopworks are great and this one is no exception. CDAs are not real common, but to find a good one is nice. Taste is roasted malts and slightly bitter chocolate and hops.

I got this in a tall red can with the description West Coast Imperial IPA, not a black ale. And it was a very tasty, worthy WCIIPA. Did they change this from a black ale, or are we getting a different version here in Japan?

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Dark brown , beige skin of head. Roasty, nutty aroma. Sweet, roasty malts with a gentle bitterness, more from the roast than the hops. Smooth.

A-like the beautiful brunette of beer.
S-like a hoppy cryo IPA, and a little bit of roast from the malts
T-Above avg bitter and below average malt flavors for the style. Below avg sweet
M-Light (+) body, finishes dry, above average carbonation
O-Solid black IPA. Not "chase it" great, but more than good enough to grab a few from the cooler at your local bottle shop when they appear

16oz can

Pours a perfect 2 finger tan head into my Willi glass, a little fluffy. Retention is pretty nice. Initial lacing looks ok. Body is black with brown hues when held to the light. Looks quite nice so far.

Nose has huge notes of dank resin and pine, mixed with softer berry notes – you smell the Simcoe big time. I don’t get a whole lot of malt on the nose, but A) that is to be expected with something this hoppy, especially with the Cryo hops, and B) I don’t care, it smells too damn good. Usually I would care, cause I love the balance of Black IPA’s, but I could basically care less right now. Wonderful.

Flavor is very nice, albeit a dwarfed version of the nose. You get that fresh pine up front, green, some resin. Finishes with a little bit of berry and some dankness. Maybe the smallest malt presence, faint bitter chocolate, but it’s not much of a factor here. Still, very nice.

Carbonation is medium, or maybe a touch over. Bitterness and sugar flirt with each other. Bitterness hits first and foremost, pretty pronounced, but some mild-medium sugars are noticeable throughout and this balances well. Body has a pretty nice weight to it, but it’s not overwhelming. Very nice mouthfeel.

Drinks very lively with the bitterness, carbonation and hop flavor making for a fun and easy drinking palate.

Appearance turned out pretty nice, lacing was a little broken up, but cohesive for the most part.

I’m satisfied with this hop bomb enough to disregard the lack of a malt profile, but technically speaking it’s the one thing this beer is missing. Not grumpy about it, but it’s keeping it from those perfect scores.

On-tap in Meridian, served in a pint shaker.

A: Dark brown body with ruby clearly showing on the edges.

S: Roasty coffee and piney citrus notes on the nose.

T: Follows the nose as well, malt and roasty espresso with mild acrid bitterness and hints of creamy chocolate smoothness combines with a blast of rindy citrus hops.

MF: Creamier mouthfeel with no alcohol presence.

O: A very decent Black IPA.
