Well, here's another one, another barley malt deprived "IPA". When an attempt to empty a pint can's contents into a clear glass Imperial pint mug fails because of a huge foamy mess atop the liquid, something isn't right. Of course, after first performing like it isn't going to stop expanding, the foam then recedes quickly, unevenly, unattractively and without much glass lacing. Why the emphasis on the appearance? Experience tells this look will likely be followed by a taste lacking in complexity and a mouthfeel that is too thin to be a true IPA. Underneath the foam lies a dark and dull apricot-amber liquid that's opaque, but not murky. There's very little to smell, but what is there brings reminders of dish detergent. Sometimes looks don't lie and this is one of those times. Some adjunct lagers provide at least this much body. The sweetness provided by the starches is shallow, just sweet without adding any other flavor. Mitigating this would be disaster is the taste. It's far better than one would expect dish detergent to be. It's hoppy enough, pinelike and it dries out and gets even a little more bitter during the finish. It can't be helped but to wonder how good this could have been if sufficient barley malt had been included. The mouthfeel gets a little more appreciation when the barely noticeable 7.6% ABV is factored in. Overall, there's no reason to seek this out.
