Zillertal Weißbier Dunkel Naturtrub.
50cl green glass bottle with a branded pry-off crown cap purchased at an MPreis in Innsbruck, Austria. Best before: 29.12.16. Tan colour label.
5.00% ABV. Served cold into a pilsner glass. Expectations are average; this is my first beer from this brewery.
HEAD: Occupies ~60% of the glass. Off-white colour. Soft enough, with an even and somewhat frothy consistency. Average complexion. ~5 minute retention.
BODY: Dark murky dirty brown. Not exactly the vibrant colour you'd want in a good dunkelweizen. No yeast is visible within.
Appears well-carbonated. Not unique or special looking, but of okay appeal.
AROMA: Bready malts. Wheat. No esters, really. A biteen stale.
Aromatic intensity is low. Quite muted and reticent.
I'm not particularly excited to try this; the appearance and aroma offer little of interest.
TASTE: A hint of a doughy yeast character. Not as bready as many dunkelweizens. Wheat comes through, but isn't particularly fresh. Barley malt. Clove.
No banana, no orange peel. Don't look for complex yeasty esters here.
Not the most balanced dunkelweizen out there. Depth of flavour is quite lacking, as are more abstract factors like intricacy and subtlety. I've definitely had better, but this isn't unenjoyable - just lackluster.
I find no overt off-notes or booziness.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, overcarbonated. Dries a bit towards the finish, playing into the doughiness. Not a great texture for a dunkelweizen, lacking the fresh refreshing feel of the best examples of the style.
Not an ideal complement to the taste, but it doesn't clash with it.
OVERALL: Approachable and pleasant enough, but really lacking in comparison to the best examples of the style - especially those just a bit North. It's within style conventions, but its shallowness, simplicity, and subpar mouthfeel coupled with its generally underwhelming taste make it a brew I wouldn't buy again even at supermarket prices.
Low D+ (2.30) / NOT RECOMMENDED
