500ml can, day 2 of the Costco Canada 2014 Beer Advent calendar.

This beer pours a very cloudy, dark dishwater brown colour, with three fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and somewhat bubbly ecru head, which leaves some aggressive coral reef lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of semi-sweet roasted caramel malt, gritty wheat grain, phenolic yeast, overripe bananas, mild earthy spices, and a subtle alcohol warming. The taste is toasted wheat malt, brown sugar, still edgy yeast, a banana-led bowl of fruitiness, lessening sassy spices, and a lingering hint of booziness.

The carbonation is fairly unobtrusive, manifesting in a merely trilling frothiness, the body a sturdy medium weight, and generally smooth, nothing really existant here that would typically mess with things. It finishes well off-dry, the toasted wheat sweetness kind of running the table.

A decent enough rendition of the style, all the purity law measures adhered to fully. Yep, this is the kind of brew that is hard to differentiate, not because it is plain, but because there are so many examples, that are all pretty close to each other, when it comes down to it. That, or I'm just too lazy and/or busy right now to care. Whatever, it's good.

Bought from the Jing An FreshMart in Shanghai, China. Poured from the 500mL can into a weizen glass.

A: The beer is a murky brown/very dark amber color with a large light tan head that sticks around a good while.

S: Very aromatic. Spices dominate with clove being front and center. Banana bread all throughout. Some citrus and spiced fruit. Classic smell and very good.

T: Banana bread and spice. It seems like all the pieces are there but it's missing something. As the beer warms up some alcohol becomes more evident but not too bad or overpowering, just takes a bit away from the flavor.

F: Somewhat watery and thin, but the taste is there. Just doesn't have the body for the style.

Overall, great smelling beer, but both the taste and body don't hold up to the really good beers in this style. A welcome sight in China, but if I were in a place with a wider selection I would probably go for something else.

Pours murky brown beer with good beige creamy head. Smell of ordure, banana & wheat malts.
Inconsistent flavour, rather poor combination of wheat tones and dark beer, lack of complex nuances, pleasing taste buds. Smooth body with something reminding toffee-chocolate "Meller". Medium body and prickly carbonation, cheap and modest example.
