12 oz can is not dated but was purchased cold only about 2 weeks ago at the brewery's taproom in Traverse City, Michigan.
While the spicy aroma is so distinctive as to be foreboding, the flavor presents a showcase for a dark IPA loaded with rye. The hop load is particularly well matched with the rye.

I got a can of this beer from my BRAH-IN-LAW. It poured a hazy dark mahogany amber with khaki head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had rye brown notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with rye and dark multi grain presence with bittering hop finish. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

It’s got the smell of hoppy bitterness, the color of a brown ale, and the flavor of a creamy milkshake IPA with chocolate. This was a truly unique beer for me. It had everything I love about an IPA with some added milkshake like elements in addition to some brown ale or stout like flavors. I loved it!

This is my first rye IPA. Definitely a very unique beer from Right Brain just like their brewery in Traverse City Michigan which I would highly recommend a visit to if you’re in the area. The rye is very notable in the smell and follows in taste. A lot smoother than I expected which I think has to do with the high carbonation. Overall much better than I was expecting. To me this is more of a novelty beer that I didn’t mind giving a try. If you like rye I would recommend anyone to try this once.

A little disappointing - started off with a nice medium-dark brown color and some tan head and spotty lingering lacing. Smells good, some fruity zest hoppiness and spicy rye. Tastes more like muted citrus hoppiness with some malt, spice, light coffee and vanilla. A little dry and bitter at the end. Mild mouthfeel, good carbonation. The taste just didn’t do much for me. I’d much rather drink another American IPA.

From tasting notes 10/17/17
Had on-tap at Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City, MI
Appearance - Served in a pint, kind of a ruddy brown colored brew with a sandstone hued, thin layer of suds that coat the surface. Decent amount of lacing that comes through with some broken webbing and spotting.
Smell - Rye slice, light chocolate. Grapefruit hoppiness.
Taste - follows the nose. Flavor hits immediately with a punchy rye spice that bites at the tongue, while lesser chocolatey character rides beneath. Flavor quickly develops a thick grapefruit hop bite that only strengthens in the finish, leaving a pithy, spicy aftertaste that hangs for days.
Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Slightly chewy and done dry finish. Drinks easy enough.
Overall - Definitely a unique brew; a bit of a mutt, really. It works though, in fact it reminds me a bit of Firestone's now retired Wookey Jack, except the malts are a bit lighter, with a less roasty undertone.
