Pours very thick and black, with a quickly settling head. A single ring of lacing lingers around the edge.
Smell is very malty, nice and roasty, subtle aromas of anise and smoke. Very well balanced and enjoyable.
Taste is a little on the sweet side, earthy with a surprising amount of fruity flavors underneath. the finish is very dry, very smoky, and lightly bitter
Mouthfeel is very thick and with low carbonation, adding to the sweetness and malty flavors.
Drinkability is good, smooth and well made, with a decent abv.
Overall, a solid beer that I would try again.
P.S. Thanks to david131 for half a growler.

A- A deep dark black liquid with a thin but creamy brown head. The head dies away after a little bit. More robust than many other beers of this style.
S- Cocoa and coffee. Roasty and sweet. Smells kind of like a Tootsie Roll but with a nice roasted backing.
T- Dark roasted coffee, cocoa powder, and dark chocolate. Sweet and roasty. Very nice.
M- Clean but roasty with a bit of a lasting bitterness. The carbonation is on the light side, but could be attributed to the growler fill.
D- A very nice example of the style. Drinks rather nicely even on a hot summer evening. Highly recommended.
