The beer is very dark. Thin creamy covering of brown froth. It recedes to a steady collar that leaves some nicely leveled lacing. Good aroma of cherry, raisin, dark belgian malts, candy and yeasty esters. My first impression upon tasting is that for a 7.7% a/v beer, this packs way too much of a punch in the alcohol department. It's hot. Chemical taste as well. Like acetone. I'm gonna take a break and continue through this growler to see if these impressions fade. If not, I can't see finishing this growler.

O.K. Back again. Hour and a half later. After beating my wife in scrabble and doing a little rock climbing with my grandma, all while plowing through this growler, I'll have to say that the toxicity level of this beer has decreased. Enough so that I'll finish most of this the growler. But not enough so to call this beer that enjoyable.

Underneath the alcohol and solvent, I get a little tease of those nice traits I smelt: cherry, raisin and sweet candy.

This beer has the makings of a very nice Belgian, but maybe it was fermented too hot?? Or too quickly?? Not sure, but my least favorite beer of McCann's so far.

Here is the description from the brewer:"This style of dark Belgian ale is hard to find here in the states. In fact, we might be the first US brewery to brew one(correct me if I'm wrong). Brewed with Belgian pale, black, special B and chocolate malts, dark Belgian candi sugar and a blend of secret spices. Fermented with a Trappist monastery brewery yeast and aged a good long time. A strong ale best enjoyed in moderation.
7.7% ABV"

A-A striking dark brown bordering on black...light creamy tan head.

S-Jumps out at you with big dried dark berries, plums, cherries spices, brown sugar, molasses, dark cocoa, and a peppery yeasty belgian note too...an impressive aroma for sure..

T-Not as complex as the aroma but similar....the dark cocoa and peppery yeasty notes are clearly evident, some mild spicy alcohol notes...also some milder dried dark fruits..

M-Lower end of full bodied or high end of medium bodied...creamy and smooth carbonation....finishes a little sweet.

D-Excellent beer....This place (McCanns) continues to impress me....this would be on the par with anything from the more well known beer pubs in the state. Will pair nicely with the pre-embargo Cuban Camacho I have waiting for me in the humidor.
