10/18/20
side by side tasting of 4 Black is Beautiful beers.
Kane was the clear winner. Finback, Icarus and Springhouse were all a touch or 2 below. Finback was probably the 2nd choice.
Still; all were somewhat similar and quality.
AROMA: Chocolate, light roasted malt and coffee.
TASTE: chocolate, baking soda, mineral
FEEL: a touch watery, medium body,
OK, not in the league with the Kane or Finback versions, but tasty and enjoyable.

I have been CANxious to drink this beer since it was first CANnounced. I CANaged to score versions from three (3) different breweries & they will be my next focus in The CANQuest (tm). This is the third, alphabetically, of the three bringing this vertical to a close.
From the CAN: "Black Is Beautiful Imperial Stout"; "Brewed to support Justice and equality for People of Color"; "Hosted by Weathered Souls Brewing Co. San Antonio, TX".
As I Crack!ed open the vent on this one, the first thing that ocCANurred was a fingertip spritz due to its being a brimful craft CAN! What, they made so much of this one-off that they CAN afford not to be judicious with it?!? My slow, gentle C-Line Glug resulted in the formation of just under two fingers of fizzy, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with modest retention, quickly falling to wisps. A pseudo-cascade settled into a stygian Black/Opaque (SRM = 44) beer. This one was Black with a capital "B"! Nose had a strong roastiness, not just of coffee, but also toffee & treacle, English in its maltiness. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, a bit on the weak side for this style. The taste was more muted, more dialed back than in the previous versions. Here, its chocolatiness was more milk, than Baker's, chocolate and the flavors of anise, treacle & toffee were there, but subtly where the previous two were in-your-face with their esters. Finish was semi-dry. I was left feeling kind of unfulfilled with this version. YMMV.
