Rerate, 500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV 19%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Just a little tan foam on top, not what you would call a "head". Malty and roasty aroma, hints of salty liquorice, old rope and oak. The flavour is intensely malty and roasty, with loads of sweetness and salty liquorice. The alcohol is clearly present. Interesting beer, but a bit too far out on the weird side. 15% ABV (2010 version) was strong enough ...

Original rating: Sample at Ølfestivalen Nærbø. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Strong and intensely malty aroma and flavour, moderate roasty notes. Also notes of fortified wine. Decent hoppy bitterness too. Warming mouthfeel, of course - but the beer feels surprisingly balanced, and not extremely alcoholic for its 19% ABV. Will rerate as soon as I get a whole bottle.

Wow! I'm basing this review on the most recent year (2020) edition, which was close to flawless. Not what you'd expect from an Eisbock? Well, this one might change you perception. Insanely complex, yet still delicate,

When I saw 19% on the bottle, I knew I'd have to pick some up. My first experience with the grand Scandinavian tradition of Christmas Ale leaves me wanting more.

Look: Pours oil-slick black and stays that way in the body, no light shining through at all. Visible viscosity on the pour even at slightly-above-recommended temperature. No head to speak of but carbonation forms a thin, eggshell lacing around the rim.

Smell: Disappointingly muted on the nose, with only brown sugar and currant notes coming through even at room temperature.

Taste: Rich and bittersweet with toffee, burnt caramel, cinnamon, nutmeg, and fresh date notes. Some alcohol bitterness on the back of the palate but otherwise hides its formidable 19% abv well.

Feel: Heavy but not flabby with moderate carbonation. Some light syrup on the tongue.

Overall: While a bit early to celebrate the holiday season, this juleøl is sure to please anyone looking for a rich, dark, and warming brew.
