Poured directly from the firkin at SGB's Winter Solstice tapping for their 12th Anniversary celebration.
A - Hazy two-tone autumn brown-colored bottom with a thin, creamy beige head that settled into a thin ring of retention and deposited a bit of spotty lace on the glass.
S - First whiff reveals licorice and brown sugar with some subtle winter spices including cinnamon and, to a lesser degree, clove and nutmeg. After warming up a bit, it becomes evident that licorice is the predominant scent here. Some earthy hops, roasted malt and dark fruit notes also emerge as the liquid warmed.
T - Initial flavor features plenty of licorice/anise as well as some brown sugar sweetness. Spices are subtle overall, with cinnamon poking through the most and the clove and nutmeg relegated to the background. Some earthy hops are also in there, as well as a hint of citrus. The flavor is rounded out by a sweet caramel character that bonds everything together cohesively.
M - Quite smooth and velvety, not watery at all, especially for a firkin pour. Very soft mouthfeel overall with a mild bittersweet finish on the palate.
D - This struck me as a sort of hybrid beer, and I'm told this is basically St. Fillian's (barleywine/Wee Heavy) blended with additional spices and a bit of star anise. The result? A very drinkable, flavorful winter ale.
Steve and Heather... here's to twelve more years!

Out of the firkin at the Solstice Firkin Party at SGB on 12.21.08
A-Slightly hazy deep brownish tinged copper with a thin white ring. Leaves little lace.
S-Light holiday spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove) with a hint of licorice. A hit of sweet malt in the background.
T-Light spices, licorice with a very deep, complex, malt texture. Caramel notes, so smooth, rich and delish. Tart notes and a spicy hop kick in the finish.
M-Medium body, crazy smooth, very easy going.
D-I was not sure what to expect but it wasn't this! A wonderful blend of brews with added spices. So tasty and smooth...a lovely winter warmer....never to be had again!
