Taste: rich ground roasted coffee beans, bitter black malts, clean finish. Bold dry roasted coffee aroma. Black, opaque, tan head that dissipates fast, not much lace. Medium/full body. Good after meal stout. 6.0% ABV 14 IBUs

On nitro- tap @ the SGB on 12/7/12. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a deep brown with some ruby highlights along the edges and a finger or so of creamy mocha head. This stays rich, slathering the sides of the glass with thick lacing. The aroma has some nice smelling coffee character going on with it, with the scent of fresh roasted grounds mingling with light notes of citrus, oatmeal, cocoa and toffee. I’m really digging this.

The taste has that classic cold-seeped coffee flavor to it, with a fresh and flavorful roasted character. Backing notes of green citrus, sweet oatmeal, toffee and cocoa powder hang on the edges and nicely compliment this but the main focus is on the coffee here, which delivers, lingering with some acidic roastiness on the tongue after each sip. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just the mellowest of prickles on the tongue before giving way to the smooth and creamy feel of the nitro. This is very nice.

We don’t get to see these Coffee Stouts often enough here in my opinion but when we do, they are always a winner and this newest creation is no different. Flavorful and easy drinking as heck, I’d be down for several pints of this any time.

Served on-tap at the brewpub.

A - Pours deep dark brown, bordering on black, with a creamy one and a half finger tall white head leaving sticky rings of lace down most of the glass. The cascade effect when it is first poured is absolutely intoxicating.

S - Smells of fresh roasted espresso, chocolate, touch of vanilla, some citrus fruit and a bit more coffee for good measure. This nose is spot on and makes me want to come back time and time again.

T - Starts off with a HUGE espresso jolt that never really fades into the shadows. Hints of chocolate, citrus, vanilla and finally the oatmeal from the base beer. The coffee is fairly well balanced with all the other flavors, never really getting out of line. Finish is roasty but it doesn't last as long as others from the style do.

M - Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, creamy feel from the Nitro worked its magic to perfection. It did go a little flat toward the end of the glass, as most nitro beers do it seems, lowering this one a tiny bit.

O - Well I knew this one was going to be good but not THIS good. The coffee used worked very well with the base and yet it didn't overpower the base like others do. Get it while you can, it won't be on for long if I have anything to say about it.

Java Lava is the organic oatmeal stout base with a blend of coffee freshly roasted locally. It is the coffee roaster's current favorite blend of coffee beans that contains a portion of sumatra. I am adding this as a new offering since Sumatra was exclusively used in the Karma Sumatra coffee stout and this is not only a different blend of coffee but different amount used in this brew.

On the nitro nitro tap at the source. The brew appears a dark brown to black with a rich creamy mocha topping a finger strong. The brew displays nearly flawless powers of retention and leaves thick patches of lace sticking to the glass. When held to the light, a lighter hazy brown is seen around the edges.

The nose is earthy like fresh roasted espresso. Some hints of citrus from the coffee beans with a mild chocolate undertone. The aroma here has a pleasant balance of coffee addition to the familiar stout base which remains noticeable as not conpletely dominated.

The taste is similar to the sumatra version of this but the coffee is much more restraint. Instead of being coffee with stout added, this is a solid oatmeal stout with big coffee nose and mild flavor. Fresh sweet oats, soft bitter cocoa and a little earthen character mixes with some citrus and floral hop notes.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is very smooth and excessively drinkable via the nitro delivery. This is some fantastic stuff and worth seeking out. It has a well done balance of coffee to stout character. Paired with the vanilla bean ice cream and brownie sundae was a real treat.
