On tap @ The HopCat (Grand Rapids, MI) on 4/22/10. Served in a pint glass.

Pours black, with a ½ finger of light mocha colored head. This retains with some good looking foamy richness around the edges that leaves a solid cascade of frothy lace behind, which quickly slides down the sides of the glass. The aroma has a quality dry roasted feel going on with it, with plenty of chocolate, coffee, and a touch of roasted nuttiness as well. This was nice.

The taste is bitter chocolate and some sweeter toffee notes up front, before that mix of dry roasted malt and coffee takes over. Some earthy bitterness makes itself known throughout the profile. The mouthfeel is medium bodied; with a crisp prickle to the carbonation yet still remains a nice smoothness across the palate, enabling the body to able to pack some substance in while still staying easy feeling. Good overall feel here.

This was a pleasant little surprise on this trip to the HopCat, packing a surprising amount of full flavors for a Dry Stout and staying easy and drinkable even without the benefit of a nitro-pour. I'm glad that I gave this one a shot.
