sad. This actually tastes like a beer I made once-I was experimenting with dextrose additions to get a high gravity "more alcohol" in a short amount of time on the cheap...
I would bet money that's what they did here. super light pilsner grain with lots of yeast and dextrose... you can smell the yeast funk and there's no body... this is an attempt to make a cheap bud light with 2 times the abv. I like high gravity beers but this tastes super cheap quick and easy to me. I would even bet they used dme or extract instead of real grains since there's no nobody at all. Are there any homebrewers out there? this is the first beer I have tried of yours and it is sad. :(

my first beer ever from southern star, and a very tasty one, not quite as fresh as i want it to be from the can, but its obvious that this is a good one. i still am not totally sold on this style of beer, i feel like a lot of folks are misusing the enzymes, have different ideas of what the finished product should be like, and are just too ambitious for their actual talent levels, like with these, you cant just dry hop over all the flaws, they seem to stand out more in the dryness, and that makes the good ones harder to come by, but this is pretty close. i like this for a lot of reasons, one of them being that it has some bitterness to back up all the fruity hops, keeps it drinking like an ipa, which not enough of these do. i wish i knew what the hops were though, definite citrus, sweet orange and meyer lemon, with some melon in there as well, a splash of pineapple juice, and even a coconut flesh thing before the greenness starts to rise up and steer it bitter. a lot of these end up with an almost belgian ester, but not here, its pretty clean, even if the hops are starting to fade a little to me. the moutfeel is almost there too, nice carbonation as the style demands, and a lighter body for its pretty high strength, on the dry side. overall very good, id like to have it brand new, but i enjoyed and respect this one. shame i didnt get to try anything else from southern star while i was in texas this week...

Poured from a can into a chalice. Slightly cloudy yellow color with a good white head and decent lacing. Subdued sweet fruit smell. Lemon honey taste. Refreshing and just enough bitterness to let you know it is an IPA. I would drink it again.
