Business trip to Bronckhorster Brewery, this is their best but not always, dark even the foam, smells of dark dark, fresh-cold coffee, sour caramel sweet behind roasted aftertaste

Bottled
Pours a jet black body with big foaming tobacco stained head
Aroma of coffee irished up with rum, espresso notes and cocoa powder
Surprisingly like a spiced rum with cola
Just so easy drinking
Decidedly different

Actually this is not a stout, but a porter.
Expected too much from this one.

On tap at 16 tons the other night. God alone knows how they came by a keg of this stuff.

Something about these Dutch imperial porters (or RIS), they all seem very, very similar to me. As is typical, this beer was fairly sweet, and seemed to be dominated by licorice and vanilla, but with some underlying dark chocolate and coffee as well. The beer has a very roasty, almost gritty dry finish, and the alcohol is pretty noticeable. A little of this beer goes a long way, frankly.

While this beer has some pleasant characteristics, it wasn't so enjoyable that I'd want to ever order it again. Agree with the previous poster... there's nothing very porter like about this beer; it comes across as a barrel aged RIS (just not a particularly good one).

Got this one at the Mitra down the road. The beer name Porter but the label describes and specifically calls this beer an "imperial stout."

From a bottle into a snifter
IBU: 148
EBC: 89
Best Before 20 August 2020
Hops: Cascade and Phoenix

APPEARANCE: Pours out clear dark brown and yields a one finger, thicker looking, creamy, light cream colored head with good retention. Thicker head that the Night Porter but lighter in color. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head fades to a splotchy wisp and ring, both of which remain until the end and leave some falling dots of lacing down the sides of the glass.

SMELL: Lots of dark caramel malts, coffee, with notes of citrus hops. Dark fruits are there, molasses and some lightly roasted aromas. Different, and lacks some of the typical roasted character.

TASTE: Not your average imperial stout, and not sure it's my style. Quite sweet with very little roasted qualities. Lots of caramel and dark fruit sweetness up front, with raisins and grapes in there, and some light coffee notes as well. Big and lingering finish of sweet dark fruits, toffee, lightly roasted coffee bitterness, and some citrus hops. Molasses and dark fruit play a big part in the aftertaste. Complex, just too sweet and not roasted enough for my palate.

PALATE: Fuller body with moderate levels of carbonation. Heavy on the palate, more than enough weight, creamy as well, goes down smooth with a bite at the swallow and finishes sticky. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: Not really my thing. Too sweet and too little roasted flavors for my liking. Despite the advertised IBU's on this one, there isn't nearly enough bitterness to compete with the sweet malts this one has going on. A fun attempt, but not really worth the trouble, unfortunately. The regular Night Porter is by far the better choice. Chose not to finish this one.
