Really good barley wine w deep ruby color. None of the spiciness mentioned in previous review, may have been an off-batch. Smooth aftertaste and will be excellent for barrel-ageing (which is ongoing, bottling in September). Great lacing in glass.

Got this one at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.
From a bottle into a snifter
IBU: 79

Best Before 18 June 2025
Hops: Magnum, Galena, Centennial, Bramling Cross and Chinook.
APPEARANCE: Careful pour yields a three finger, medium looking, fluffy, off-white head with good retention. Clear dark burnt orange with lower levels of carbonation. Head fades to a full cap leaving sheets of lacing down the glass. A half wisp remains coating the glass with lace. Head's a bit too big for the style, but this is rather good looking.
SMELL: Spicy notes with melon sweetness, grassy hops and floral notes on the nose. Lightly funky as well, which is odd for the style. Bold enough.
TASTE: Follows nose. Spicy yeast qualities with alcohol and melon sweetness up front, then more sweet malts, grassy hops, hay and barnyard funk, with some floral bitterness at the swallow. Big and lingering finish is boozy with spicy alcohol, bitter floral hops and light caramel sweetness. Plenty spicy and lightly funky, which is nice, but not quite a barleywine.
PALATE: Light body with higher levels of carbonation. Thinner for the style. Very bubbly yet creamy on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a bite and finishes slightly sticky. Heat lingers. Poor. Light, airy and abrasive.
OVERALL: I didn't really find this a very good barleywine. Perhaps a strong Belgian ale would have been a better label, as this one is too spicy and funky to be considered a barleywine. The light and bubbly feel didn't help the situation either. It's actually a pretty solid beer, but not something I'd crave when in the mood for a barleywine.
