Rerate. 660 ml bottle covered in red paper, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10%. Original gravity 1090, final gravity 1015. Dark brown colour, moderate beige head. Very peaty aroma, also notes of sweetish malts and smoked meat. The flavour is medium sweet and very peaty / smokey. The bottle is for sharing! Original rating: Shared bottle at local tasting (from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam). ABV is 9%. Very dark brown colour. Intensely peaty aroma and flavour - the flavour is too peaty for me.

ged 4.3 years. Smoke throughout, more (and with floaties) in the finish. Dark colour. Sour, peaty aroma. Maybe diminished on ageing? Smooth nouthfeel.

Thanks to jdiddy for the opportunity to try this one. Pour is mahogany in color with clusters of bubbles around the edges. There is a huge peat presence in the nose, as well as a slightly medicinal quality somewhat akin to epsom salts. Taste consistent with nose - whiskey overshadows all, with some smoked malt character coming out in the back. Mouthfeel is medium-light in body with an even carbonation. Not a beer that's really in my wheelhouse; however, if you are a whiskey aficionado, this one might be for you.

Bottled August 2012, number 8998.
Beer is a very dark chestnut brown, with a small tan head.
Nose is extremely peaty. Scotch and some oak. There is a bit of a malty scent, which is about all that reveals that this is a beer rather than an actual glass of Islay whisky.
The peat and scotch are strongly present in the flavour as well, but the rest of the beer is more present than in the nose. Quite a bit of alcohol heat. Some bready malt and a bit of dark fruit. A slight Belgian yeast flavour. The BSDA element is there, but the barrel takes priority here, although the base beer comes out more in the finish.
Full bodied, moderate to strongly carbonated, creamy.
Overall, quite good. This one would be divisive. If you like Islay malts (as I do), then it is quite enjoyable. If you do not like Islay malts or peat... stay away.

Pours a beautiful dark amber color with splashes of orange and red highlighting. Smells of amazing Islay Scotch notes, peaty and smoky lovingly dominating a simply wonderful nose. I ended up smelling this one longer than usual as the aroma really stands out. First sip is heaven pure and simple. Though quite thin in body this puppy makes up for that by being oh so flavorful. This is as good as it gets when one ages in an Islay barrel. Super tasty Wow, wow, wow.

O-unique. there is not a single beer i've had that tastes anything like this. anything. it's by far the greatest example of barrel character i've come across. nothing from a barrel is influenced in flavor the way this is.

APPEARANCE: Pours a three finger, medium looking, light tan head with very good retention. Bistre brown with medium levels of carbonation. Head slowl fades to a foamy cap and coats the sides of the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass. Good looking.
SMELL: Lots of peat and earthy notes. Some leather, caramel, dark fruits and woody aromas, mostly oak and light vanilla. Peat and earth notes are very forthcoming. Big peated whisky barrel here.
TASTE: Very peaty with lots of oak, wood and earthy flavors. Leather and piles of earthy, peated whisky. Bold and lingering finish of caramel, dark fruits, oak, and huge peated whisky linger on the palate. Some alcohol as well. There is a touch of base beer in there, but this is a peat and wood bomb.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. A little light on the palate, creamy enough, goes down smooth with a bit of a scratch at the swallow and finishes slightly dry.
OVERALL: This one is tough to judge. It's a huge peat bomb, so if you like peated whisky, you'll absolutely love this beer. If you're not a fan, then you'll hate it. I enjoy peat flavors, but this one is a little too overdone perhaps. Regardless, this is a fun beer that's well worth checking out. De Dochter is a brewery worth watching, as they've been doing some enjoyable stuff for a while now. Thanks again Doops!
