Pours with thick, fluffy beige head, body is dark brown and relatively clear. Light aroma and taste of roast grains, sweet malt, burnt toast. Nice mouthfeel, medium weight. Abrupt finish.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a dark mahogany brown with a one finger khaki head with good retention and lacing. Looks nice. Aroma of light toasted malt, molasses, a hint of cocoa. Flavor is attenuated dark toasted malt and molasses, mild coffee and chocolate. Finishes with mild toasted malt with a hint of char and light grassy hops a bit stark.. Light to medium bodied. Aroma and looks are great, but the flavor is somewhat washed out. Many of the attributes of a Schwartzbier lead to expectations that are not fulfilled. The flavor is good with interesting components, but surprisingly mild. A big step up from Euro lagers, but not full bodied enough to return to.

Pours an almost opaque crimson-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thin streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, molasses, and burnt caramel aromas. Taste is much the same with burnt toast, burnt caramel, molasses, and metallic flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above avearge beer with some decent molasses and caramel aspects in the smell and taste.

Serving type: bottle.

16.9 ox brown bottle poured into a pint glass. The label is different from the one pictured on BA, but it's the same beer. Beer pours dark brown with a thickish and clingy tan head. It has nice lacing.

It has an aroma of lightly roasted malts & brown sugar.

The beer is a slightly sweet with a bit of roasted malts and something earthy/dusty. Beer sweetens as it warms and that causes it lose a bit of balance. Maybe it has a bit of age on it? Wish this one was dated.

The mouth is yeoman like with prickly carbonation.

Not bad by any means, but really not that good either. Maybe a field trip to Czech Republic is in order to try it closer to the source..

Clear dark brown colored beer with a small brown colored head.

Smells of toasted grain and flowery noble hops. Chocolate and coffee aromas.

Starts out fairly dry with the taste of charred malt. Tastes of coffee with a medium level of bitterness.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall just an OK beer nothing special.

Dark russet color in the big chalice. An average foam bubbling up. Sprightly mouthfeel. Slight hop aroma in the usual Euro Lager vein. A little of the roasted malt with some just plain burnt taste. That odd hoppy, charred flavor is a puzzler. Not very bitter at all.

A nice wash of sudsiness with a very modest flavor. I would wish for a cleaner flavor. This is quite drinkable but it seems like a mediocre compromise between a Czech Pilsener and a Schwartzbier. While it's fairly decent for a lower-alcohol brew, there are so many Utah supermarket beers that will provide more pleasure for 4.0 % ABV.

From the 500 ml bottle bought at the Utah Liquor Store in Sugar House.
