cleverly named and real tasty, even without being served on the more traditional nitro, it really is smooth, full flavored, and a little more robust and strong than many, a nice take on the style that really hit for me, very fresh, bold, and bitter, close to black, high tan headed, lively feeling keeping it from being heavy, good balance if you like full flavored beer. it smells super roasty, even smoked to a subtle degree, but with bready and cocoa notes in it, coffee, quite dry to me, as it should be, a little less from the yeast that i typically expect in the style, but it keeps to focus on the grain, earthy to me, lightly charred, faint licorice to me, more of that as it warms a little. the flavor is bitter from start to finish with hints of molasses and black tea, a little more from the ferment now, wet stone and sort of a clay-like mineral thing going on, day old black coffee and even trace acidity there, unsweetened chocolate, almost a wooden aspect about it, frankly its quite complex for a style that usually doesnt have enormous depth. its dry, fluffy, bitter, and hearty, but its also really drinkable, makes sense as a morning beer, and is something they should be proud of, clean on the ferment, everything i want in the style. didnt drink enough of these this season, liked this one a lot.
