Brewed for GABS 2014 in Melbourne. I've called this an Eisbock here, although it's not really clear how it was fermented. Called a "Dessert Style Ice Beer" in the official programme.
Pours a deep red colour, darker than I expected. Head is beige and dense and creamy. Sticks around nicely.
Smells gorgeous. All sweetness with a huge creme custard kind of aroma. Loads of caramel, sticky English toffee, just bags and bags of sweetness. Part of me wants to hate it but so many other parts are screaming out for more. Amazing.
Taste is sweet sweet sweet. Caramel and toffee with a big creamy custard kind of flavour. Just residual, complex, malty sugars all the way through this, touch of raisins and ice wine. Boozey, huge but for something this sweet it's so palatable. Very impressive.
Body is thick, syrupy; what else could you expect? Alcohol is a bit sharp on there but again it's asking a bit much for 13% to be invisible.
Aargh, it's agonisingly close to a masterpiece. Would love to see a dialled-back 9% version of this same beer.
All that said though, upon retasting this was my #5 beer of the whole festival.
