Review from notes taken in Koln in March 2016:

350ml (yes, really) format brown glass bottle purchased at the BierMuseum kiosk in Koln, Germany. The loud label really wants you to be aware this is a Cuban beer. 5.40% ABV.

A: Pours a standard white crown cap with ~1 minute retention but no lacing and average characteristics in terms of consistency and complexion.

Body colour is a pale copper with honey hues.

Appears undercarbonated. Suggests a generic lager. There're no unique or special characteristics here.

Sm: Cheap generic malted barley aroma on par with a Spanish lager like Voll Damm. Moderately high sweetness.

No hop presence. No noticeable yeast presence/esters.

Aroma is of average intensity, suggesting a shallow simple brew with no interesting flavours.

T: Matches the aroma. Shallow, simple, generic.

Elements like balance and intricacy aren't even worth examining in a beer this painfully crude.

Mf: Oddly dry, actually, especially towards the finish, which really reduces drinkability. Slightly coarse (even scratchy and rough), unrefreshing, medium-bodied, slightly stale, slightly syrupy. Has too much thickness and heft on the palate for a beer so simple.

There's no harmony of texture and taste here.

O: Tastes like an ersatz Spanish lager. Completely unremarkable, but certainly drinkable in spite of its many shortcomings. Its stale taste and weirdly dry, rough mouthfeel will turn off discerning drinkers and casual drinkers alike. I wouldn't recommend this to others, nor would I buy it again (especially at European import prices).

High D+ (2.49) / NOT RECOMMENDED

From Festival de las Naciones. In Ikea's pilsen glass. Watching Sons of Anarchy 1x12. A bit better than a typical spanish industrial lager. Taste reminds a bit to the cristal beer. Maybe some southamerican hops?

This is a fairly standard, simple, but good and very enjoyable pale lager with a bit more hoppy bite than most. Dark gold,it has a small white head soon thinning to foamy ring.

Aroma s rich honeyed bread.

Taste is nice grassy-lemony zesty bitterness over light grain/apple malty sweetness. It's on the full-bodied and tasty side for the style, with a gently lingering minty hop bitterness.

Pours a clear golden color. There are about two fingers of white froth head that immediately disappears.
The aroma is mild but pleasant. Some basic malts and grains are picked up.
The taste is light, not really watery. Starts sweet, continues with nicely balanced body, high carbonation, and finishes with a slight bittery feel.
Refreshing and easy to drink. Decent.

350ml bottle, poured into Kasteel goblet.

A: Golden, clear, small fading head, not much lacing.

S: lemon, lime, wheat. More hoppy than expected.

T: On the sweet side, faint citrus, slight sugary finish. The ajuncts were present but didn't over power the beer.

M: Crisp, light bodied, initially well carbonated but faded slightly.

O: Pretty decent for an Ajunct Lager, could see myself drinking a few on a hot day.

A 350ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2012, so it's a little out of date. Picked up cheap from a local off-licence. There's a pirate on the label, and the ingredient list mentions the use of sugar.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A bright golden colour with good carbonation and some odd floating sediment. Forms a small head of white foam that lasts for a minute or so before dissipating. Aroma of cooked wet grain, stewed veg, corn, skunkiness and solvent. Mildly sweet and highly disgusting.

Tastes of acrid stewed grain, overcooked veggies and skunky hops. An astringent solventy twang in the background, like some sort of industrial cleaner. Mouthfeel is thin and watery, with tingly carbonation and a solventy 'heat' on the tongue. Aftertaste of bitter veg/leaves.

Simply vile. Possibly the worst beer I've tried to date - so horrid I'm not even sure it's beer. This really has no redeeming characteristics; both taste and aroma are foul. It's hard to know whether it was always this bad or if age has corrupted it further. I'm going to drain-pour the rest. If you see it do not be tempted - avoid like the plague!

Brown 350ml bottle, best before 1st Feb 2012, drank and reviewed July 2011: poured into a Duvel glass.

Looked fine, deep golden yellow with a thick snowy white head on top.

The only smells i could find were of grains and a nasty metalic hint.

The beer was initially refreshing and dry, but there was something wrong from the start also, it had that terrible metalic feel some cheap lagers have. The blend of hops and malts seemed to produce a nothing taste apart from that tinny flavour I picked up straight away and I really struggled to finish the bottle off.

Blonde golden color, clean. A white, average foam.
In the smell some metallic hop, and a quite heavy maltiness. Cooked cereals.
Same notes in the taste, with a bit of hop in the back, to balance.
Same note again in the aftertaste, nothing more.
In the end, a banal macro lager.

A - Clear gold color, a touch less clear than many other beers of the style. Decent sized white, foamy, bubbly head that disappears pretty fast leaving no lace. Pretty typical appearance for the style.

S - A bit thin with sweet malt and a bit of a corn/grain/husk aroma as well. A slight hint of bready malt as well. Nothing all that special about the aroma.

T - Light on taste especially at the beginning of the sip. Some light malt and corn taste provides the base. Mid sip this gets a bit stronger with a bit of breadiness. Also some floral hops come out. Toward the finish the hops are a bit stronger and there is a slight tang to the grain taste. Overall it is fairly sweet, but there is a slight bitterness and tang to it.

M - Light body with a healthy amount of carbonation. A little spritzy and refreshing but a little drying on the finish.

D - Decently drinkable beer. Not too different from others in the style. It has a sweetness and a grainy, malty taste. Not really interesting, but it goes down fairly easy.

Notes: Nothing all that special about this beer. Sweet malt and adjunct make up most of the taste. An ok amount of hops for the style, but they are overshadowed.

330 ml. bottle, labeled "Cubanero Fuerte". Average deep golden colour, small head that doesn't hold and no lacing. Boring smell of herbs, with some sweetness from malts and chemical soap.
Watery flavor, taste of hops and herbs. Just like a typical boring mass market beer that looks like they were all the same. I wonder what makes them label this beer as "strong".

Appearance is quite average - golden colour with not particularly deep head. Aroma is not too pleasant - a bit sweet and malty. Taste is better, as it has nice level bitterness, but on the negative side - it is too sugary with weak and sweet aftertaste.

Overall, it is too sweet for me, would not drink again.

Brown bottled with a stylized pirate on the label, this beer pours a deep gold color with a shallow head. The label indicates malted barley, water, hops, yeast, and sugar cane as ingredients. The aroma presents a moderately sweet and syurpy quality, and an old, oxidized hop smell that's not at all pleasant. The taste, however is slightly better than expected. Only moderate sweetness, despite the aroma. The beer is a bit sugary, but balanced with hops. The taste is a little thin, though, and not really rounded or developed. Small malt flavor, and only flirtatious hop bitterness leave the taste a little wanting. Medium in body. The finish is a little sweet, with an agreeable bitterness. All in all, a bit below average, but not really undrinkable.
