Pours an amber brown color with a hint of ruby highlights. A bit hazy. The head is tight but short; settles into a light cap.
The aroma is of a light brown bread. A hint of toffee but not much. A very subtle whiff of the barrel. Not much gin in the aroma or of the juniper or rye. There is kind of a musty scent. Doesn't smell bad but nothing is really popping.
The taste is of a sweet amber malt. Toffee notes bring the sweetness. Slight sourness from the rye. The gin flavors come through in the finish. The juniper, spruce and other aromatics come through pretty well. There is a slight wood flavor from the barrel. The gin adds a very nice complexity without overwhelming the beer.
The feel is light with semi-soft carbonation. Sweet on the palate but not overly so. The gin adds a needed bitter offset. The finish borders on sticky with a slight belly burn.
Not a huge fan of the base beer but I really enjoy the gin barrel treatment. It really compliments this beer.
