I had spent a day in München on 23SEP11 at The Oktoberfest. Since I was staying in Hirschaid, a stop at Schwarzes Kreuz was possible on my way home. From the train station in Eggolsheim, it was about a 20 minute walk to Schwarzes Kreuz.
After a leisurely walk through the Franconian countryside, I came to the small village of Eggolsheim, and the pub in the center of town. It is in the ground-floor of a white-washed brick building. In through the door to the foyer and then a sharp right to the Stube... Once in, it's a nice, old traditional place. The service bar is at the rear left of the room, and tables, chairs and benches circle the rest of the room. The Stube is mostly medium-colored wood paneling, with a nice beamed ceiling. When I arrived, I was the lone foreigner amongst a half-dozen elderly locals. One took a shine to me and told me about the history of the town. This little Burg of about 300 people once had 7 breweries. Now, the Kreuz is the only one left. Bummer! They only have one bier here, their Vollbier, which is pretty good. I asked if it was an export, or a helles, and was told it was simply a "lager". Still, they get a 3 from me for selection, because it's fresh and local... Hanging with the regulars was cool, in this old-time Stube. The brewer was at the service bar filling the Krugs with suds... a friendly, personable gent. There should be more places like this around. Sadly, they are vanishing as large conglomerates buy up little places, or the old-time families decide to not continue in the business. I was glad to have experienced this small slice of old-time Bayerisch tradition. Zum Wohl!!
