12oz glass, 9.5% ABV, at The Underground. A barrel-aged porter, apparently.
This beer appears a fairly solid black abyss, with very slight basal cola highlights, and two slender fingers of creamy, moslty bubbly chocolate milk brown head, which leaves some nicely spectral webbed lace around the glass as things duly drop away.
It smells of boozy Christmas chocolates direct from Zellers' shelves, caramel nougat, creamy vanilla, a bit of charred oak stave woodiness, some mild cafe au lait, and a lurking bourbon alcohol astringency. The taste is still big on the milky cocoa, with some coffee ice cream addenda, a further mildly sour milkiness, blended well with the oakey vanilla, understated caramel malt, softly edgy woodiness, and simmering bourbon liquor warmth.
The bubbles are fairly well sublimated, the body a nascent medium-heavy weight, and more or less smooth, as a lot of other players seem to bristle, looking for their veritable pound of flesh. It finishes just on the sweet side, the bourbon wholeness holstering its pistols for the most part, letting the underlying boozed-up porter do its thing.
While not the heaviest or headiest of the style, I appreciate the restraint employed here - all the myriad flavours get their turn, but nothing overreaches, and the alcohol, as strong as it is, likewise plays it cool. I'm sure Lanny is indeed proud of this one, and very well should be.

A once in a lifetime event to be had in beer form.
This is the 6 or 7th time they have brewed this form of beer and they keep getting better and better with their brewing qualities and ingredients.
When poured from my growler it appears quite black with a red hue in the head. It doesn't last too long but sticks along the edges of the cup.
Smell, a good strong upfront whiskey followed by a slight chocolate aroma and slightly sweet tones. A bit of alcohol in it too.
Taste, on the front side a nice balance of malt followed by the oak age whiskey barrel. Towards the finish there is a slight chocolate flavor that comes out and balances the bitter oakiness.
Mouthfeel, good and rich coating my entire mouth, as if you were enjoying the last of your whiskey shot.
Overall the best so far in the years that I have had it. Bravo tamarack one all 5 stars for you!
