tasty vanilla porter, a new one to me at the boise location, nice dark beer selection happening right now, perfect for winter. this is better than a lot of them because its neither too sugary nor too heavy on the vanilla that it becomes forced and one dimensional, so nice restraint. not as dark as expected, nor as full bodied, but no problem, its still roastier than most brown ales and has enough structure to support the flavors in this, since its all a bit mellow, lends to drinkability. reddish in the daylight at the edges, more richer brown in its core, short but lasting just off white head, all airy and patient on top. the nose here hints at some coffee beans, the warming vanilla, natural and not laden with alcohol, not presenting like an extract, more real bean scrape, which is cool, its elegant and sexy and an accent not a driver, brings chocolate out of the malt base too. the flavor has vanilla start to finish, only sweet a little bit in the center with some crystal malt and a graham cracker note, but the finish is cleaner, some bitterness from the roast but not too dark, no real linger, nothing from the yeast either, so its just grains and vanilla pods most of the way, simple but in a good way, well refined and tidy, and a supreme morning and hangover beer, which is just what i needed when i had this. it warms up well too, would be a great candidate for nitro, and is very drinkable compared to a lot of its diabetic peers. nicely executed and genuine.
