As I delve into this pilot beer, I can't help but wonder about its origins. The label suggests that 'Fricker's Dove' was brewed in Portland, but 10 Barrel's home base is in Bend, OR. Could this be a result of a pilothouse brewing beers exclusively for competition? If so, it's a bit of a shame. If these beers are good enough to compete, shouldn't the public get to enjoy them too?
I served in a Belcher glass at 42 degrees. The pour created a frothy, foamy two-fingered head with excellent retention. The slow dissipation left some lacing on the glass. The color is golden yellow with straw hues charting around SRM 4. The clarity is clear, with lots of energetic carbonation bubbles. The appearance is above average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I am disappointed. The malt and hops blend, and I only detect a little for fragrant hops. The aromas I smell are crackers, floral esters, herbal, light orange, and grass. I am unable to detect much else. The nose is plain and uninteresting.
The malt profile is bready, with toasted bread crust and biscuit. The hops are floral, grassy, and tangerines. The only other flavor I notice is a light medicinal property akin to bandaids.
The mouthfeel is lightly astringent and finishing dry. The body is medium and has medium carbonation.
This beer could be better. I was expecting an outstanding beer for a pilot beer, and I was left wanting more. The hops were mellow, and for a pale ale, this could have been amber ale or a slightly hoppy blonde ale.
