A 'new' pumpkin ale (possibly my last one til next fall) in the first week of December? Such is the case at Bailey's Taproom today ~ hooray! A 10 oz. pour.
A: Copper-orange, just a little haziness. Underwhelming carbonation, just a few randomly rising bubbles and hair-thin threads. Sudsy ivory topping covers with an ebbing half-finger. Good lace, sticking as fishnet.
S: Enticing scent of 'pumpkin spice' - the requisite nutmeg/cinnamon thing that some find to be a turn-off... But that I enjoy immensely. Mild sweet citrus and something a little floral.and honey-like.
T: Bready and grassy, well-spiced (rye and something like black pepper... as well as the requisite allspice 'pie' flavors). Although on the malty side, sweetness is held in check quite well. The lasting flavors are earthy ground spices and crusty/dry bread.
M: Crisp like an autumn afternoon and surprisingly refreshing (this from the guy who just finished a 4-mile+ hike up/down the Marquam Trail). Sturdy medium-ish body and steady carbonated feel. Lasting spices leave a dryness and tingle a bit in the finish.
O: Dumb name aside, a really solid pumpkin ale; it captures all the essentials that I find endearing of the style. A nice surprise to find this here at the cusp of winter; one I'll definitely look for next year.
