Beer is arguably 10,000 year old. Many cultures throughout history have made their mark on beer culture both in flavor and innovation. However, when it comes to clean refreshing bier, few can rival the Germans. This Land Lager is a German-style Helles. Ask Brewmaster Eric Marshall about his favorite beer in the world and his eyes light up. It's the beautiful simplicity of the Helles.

12f fl oz can:

Pale malt/2-row. Hints of grassy hop flavour.

There isn't much here, and it compares unfavorably to Marshall's contract brewed "Quittin Time" Quiktrip exclusive in terms of no-frills lagers.

Got it in a 12oz can with "living on lager time January 16, 2022" on the bottom. Neat little reference.

It poured a golden color, not clear, but fairly close. One finger thick cream head.

Flavour-wise it is about what you'd expect from a lager, but with a small twist that is somewhat difficult to place. It's more on the attaque of the flavour. Aftertaste is quite similar to many other lagers.

Overall, I get this often, as I prefer Ales, lagers, and pils. However, I will point out that this is one of a few beers I get when there is no Weihenstephaner around and I'm craving a lager/pils. If you stop on by Oklahoma, definitely give it a try.

Edit: Realized I hadn't even talked about flavour.

Picked this up in Oklahoma over the summer when I was on the road as it was refreshing to see something from the Sooner State that wasn't from Prairie. Enjoy kicking back with this style and although it's finally turned cooler here, I enjoyed having this as it was plenty bright, easy to drink, and just as refreshing as stated in it's description!

Not surprisingly, this had a bright hue of honey when held up to the light as there were enough fine streams of bubbles coming up throughout my session. Enough head topped this off as it nearly filled up the remainder of my pint glass as the lacing left behind was in the form of a few sagging rings along the lower half of my pint glass. German hops, wheat, wildflower, and a hint of honey were in the nose as the taste had all of those in it as well. Lots of biscuit and a bit of grain rounded out the mouthfeel as this finished somewhat slick and grassy with bread lingering on my palate once this fully went down.

Beer doesn't less unassuming than this as this didn't stay around in my glass for very long, as I was glad that I had a few more cans leftover from my ride home. Couldn't find the booze in here and I couldn't care either as this was proof of why Helles Lagers make wonderful session beers. The date on the bottom of the can appeared to be 7/23 with "THIS LAND IS GRAND" written above it and yes, even something like this served as a reminder of why this is completely true! Indeed, this had a beautiful simplicity to it that might even make your eyes light up!

Appearance:
Hazy yellow-gold. Decent head retention and lacing. The haze falls outside the style guideline. There is nothing in the description to explain this away. It doe snot appear to be a chill haze because it does not clear up at warmer temps. 4 for head and color and a 2 for haze averages out to a 3.

Aroma:
Sweet honey and biscuits from the malt and a soft, floral, herbal noble hop note.

Flavor:
Strong and slightly sweet biscuity malts, tempered by soft noble hop bitterness and flavor. Clean, crisp finish. Notes of wildflower honey in there as well. The hop bitterness is prominent, more like a Pils, but I hear that is acceptable to a point. After all, this Bavarian style was brewed to mimic German Pils brewed in other regions of the country.

Mouthfeel:
Light to medium in the mouth, Moderate carbonation and no astringency or harshness. Feels great going down.

Overall:
A very tasty and approachable beer. The balance of the malt and hops is excellent. It does skew to the bitter side of the style, if not a bit too bitter. Marshall does not publish IBUs so it is hard to judge that aspect. The hazy color looks more like a Wheat ale than a Helles Lager.

A pale yellow orange brew that looks sharp and clean. Smells of straw, lemon and a bit o' orange. A bit o' biscut and lemon zest on the tongue. Some faint grass and straw. Has a welcomed hop bite in the finish. Light to medium in body and blended perfectly all around.

If Woody Guthrie drank beer today he would drink Marshal, and not only because Marshal makes good, straight-forward beer, but they've stayed true to their roots. Hard to beat that combination these days.

**blind review 11.17.18** (from 4.12 to 4.22)

A hazy yellow-orange brew. Straw, lemon and melon to the nose.

Tastes like a bowl of melon, white grape and a squirt lemon with a pinch of a sugar. Notes of grain are also identified.

Dry, clean and crisp like it should be. Light and accessible, but still flavorful.

There's no doubt Marshal know what they are doing with lagers, and this is one of their best.

From a growler. Pours a hazy golden color with carbonation but minimal head and no lacing. Nose of wheat and spicy hops. Taste follows nose with a slightly sweet malt, wheat, and spicy hops with a smooth finish. Medium carbonation and medium body with no aftertastes.
This beer was set up to be their version of an underwhelming summer wheat beer, and it ended up being a respectful nod to the style. Crisp with the subtle hops that a Helles style should have. Everything was done simply and properly, creating a good, balanced beer.
