Visited this great place during a weekend of cafe hopping with some Belgian friends. Lots of history here as this is the oldest house in Hoegaarden. 300 years ago the house burned to its foundations. A new house was built, hence the name Nieuwhuys (English = New House). The atmosphere was more modern than most Belgian cafes, but very pleasant and smoke-free. Tried each of the three house brews (Alpaïde, Rosdel, Huardis) and they were all excellent. The Alpaïde was one of the best Belgian beers I've ever had. The owners, Jan and Mieke, were extremely friendly and gave us a tour of the brewery even though it was closed. The brewery isn't big, but you could hear the passion of the owner Mieke during the tour. And you could definitely taste it in their beer. The food is also not to be missed. Our friends suggested an authentic regional dish called Witloof. It's basically Belgian endive wrapped in ham, smothered in Gouda cheese and baked in the oven. It was incredible! And cheap too! We're already planning a return trip next month!
