12 oz. bottle that my parents picked up as a gift for me in Ushuaia, Argentina. Dated with "consume before" September 2009. Label declares it "stout" though it is completely dominated by a fruity yeast strain that tells me this is actually a Belgian dark ale.
A: Very dark, nearly black with a large tan head. Medium retention and little lacing.
S: Lots of fruity yeast notes accompany a dark roasted character. Somewhat spicy with toasty caramel.
T: Fruity, spicy yeast is tempered with a thorough dark roasted flavor. Rich fruity esters dominate and the smooth coffeelike roast accompanies it every step of the way. Somewhat surprising brew, be prepared for a roasty stout that is actually dominated by the yeast strain from start to finish.
M: Light and somewhat bubbly. A bit light, which is a choice, but seems awfully bubbly (especially for a bottle conditioned brew).
D: Fairly robust yeast flavors limit my ability to quaff this one, and the roasty contrast is somewhat one-noted. It took me a little bit of time to wrap my mind around this beer as more of a light and highly roasted Belgian ale versus something more like an English style stout I was expecting. Overall, decently drinkable once I became accustomed to this one.
