I went to Granite City one night, on a whim, thinking I could have a nice quiet dinner and possibly have a decent beer. Little did I know that as part of their training Granite City instructs their bartenders to try and strike up conversation with the guests at the bar. I don't necessarily mind a talkative bar keep but mindless banter in the middle of dinner is kind of a distraction. That's my rant, now on to a real review.
A - Nice, clean and modern. There is enough light to see but not so much as to burn your retinas. It makes for a very relaxing mood.
S - Very attentive, much to a fault. However my order was taken fast and I received my food promptly.
S - The menu is typical gastropub. The beer list hits all the favorite styles: IPA, Bock, Stout, North American Lager etc. They usually have a seasonal on tap as well. None of their beers are exceptional but I've never had anything horrible.
F - I used to go to Granite City because of the food (not the beer). However, the quality of the food has been on a steady decline. I ordered a Philly Cheese steak once and the steak was over cooked and the peppers were limp and soggy. Another time I ordered calamari and they were completely overcooked and rubbery.
V - I think for what I get at Granite City the prices are way too high. There are plenty of places in town where I get a better bang for the buck.

Based on a second visit 7/14/2009 I'm knocking selection down to average, only 6 beers on offer
Low & behold a place for decent beer 30 minutes from Father-in-Law's farm, yeah!!!
Although this place looked very corporate, I like the cleanness & openness of the design
Service was great, the server knew a bit about their product line, but was flustered when I asked if they did any Cask beer.
Two lagers (including a bock!), three ales & blended offerings (meh). I liked the Bock, IPA Stout,& Hefe, all were above average or better
Good selection of food, looks like they do killer brunch. The quality of the food was good as well. Kind of upscale, but the shrimp dishes we had were yummy.
Lunch with a couple of beers, a sample flight, a kid's meal & a split dessert came to $68 before the tip, so bring your wallet!
