Located in the sub-tropical getaway of Jeju Island Modern Time is probably the cutting edge brewery in all of Korea. They enter the World Beer Championships and the like, are pushing the limits of what brewing can offer in Korea and certainly striking out on their own when it comes to the beers that they offer.

Located in Jeju city, Modern time occupies the second floor of a nondescript building. Not much to differentiate it from anywhere else along the street. The inside decor does little more than the outside to dissuade you that you are at anything more than a hof. However, once you try the beer you will quickly change your tune.

There are 8 beers on tap with offerings that include an Irish Stout, Pale Ale, Hefe, Doppelbock and the J-Boris, which is the beer that the brewery entered in the experimental category at the WBC. It is a unmalted beer which is quite fascinating. All the beer comes in 300cc-3000cc containers with the 3000cc a mini-keg of sorts. The beer was all quite good, if a bit subdued as far as hops go.

I really hope that this place can continue to capitalize on the buzz that is being created in Korea by business travelers and tourists who return from Japan with a profoundly different understanding of beer. They are well aware of this trend and as soon as it is no longer prohibitively expensive to bottle beer they will do so. Please seek this place out if you make it to Jeju as it is more than worth it.
