Brasseur De Montréal "5 Ans Barleywine"
341 ml brown glass bottle, at the brewery on 6 Octobre 2014
Notes: Cloudy mahogany brown body with ruby highlights beneath a yellowed off-white head. Excellent head retention and very good lacing. The aroma expresses caramelish malt, dark fruit (raisin, prune), and leafy, floral and grassy hops. The flavor follows but it's a bit thin, lacking in maltiness, and with the dark fruitiness more pronounced. It has a solid bitterness that's like the bitterness that you find in the skins of dark dried fruits.

Appearance: It has a nice brownish/red color to it. It has a nice creamy beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.
Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of caramel, toffee, dark fruit (mostly raisins), some brown sugar and piney/grassy hops.
Taste: Like the aromas, it has some sweet caramel/toffee notes, brown sugar, some dark fruit and a grassy bitterness.
Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a decent overall balance and feel.
Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with average flavors and aromas but is definitely not as balanced as it should be.

Bottle: Poured a nice copper color ale with a medium size foamy head with light retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt is not as complex or enticing as I was expecting. Taste is also dominated by dry caramel malt with not much character. Body is lighter than style would suggest with OK carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very disappointed to not find the richness I was expecting from the style.
