Who would have told Louis Moritz, who came to Barcelona originally from Alsace, that more than 150 years later his beer would become a symbol of the city, woven in with its culture, gastronomy and history? Without overlooking of course its taste and quality.

Barcelona 24/8 2019. 33 cl can from a Minimarket in a side street from the Rambla. Yellow can with a big ´M and some hop flowers in the background. Small medals with Roman heads in profile.
Pours clear golden yellow with a medium-sized white head. Bubbly. Disappears more or less leaving thin rim of foam along the side of the glass. No lacing.
Medium intense aroma a bit on the sweet side. Sweet pale malts. Grains, bread. Sugary. Light citrus rummaging in the background.
Medium strong carbonation. Thin, oily, lively texture.
Flavor is quite sweet followed by a moderate bitterness. Aftertaste is bit more bitter with a sweet undercurrent. Lingers for a while.
Generic South European pale lager. A bit on the sweet side but the light citric influence helps a bit.

This beer was given to me in February 2024 and drunk in October of that year.
L: The colour of the beer is crystal clear, bright golden yellow. A two-centimetre-high, fluffy, bright-white head sits atop the many large bubbles that rocket up the glass.
S: The nose could be more inviting. It's earthy, dusty malt with a sweet, underattenuated wort note.
T: The immediate impression is higher-than-expected, acrid bitterness that hangs around the back of the tongue, followed by a buttery sweetness that clashes with the bitterness rather than compliment it. A sourish, yeasty note hangs around after the swallow.
M: Carbonation is light, with minimal kick on the swallow. The body is medium and suits the style well.
O: This one got off to a great start with its presentation, but the nose and taste let down the whole show. This might be lovely fresh from the tap in the heat of a Barcelona summer, but it hasn't translated well to my glass on this occasion.
Cheers!

July 2007: 330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 5.4%. Crystal clear pale golden colour, fizzy, large head. Sweetish aroma with notes of grass, honey and butterscotch. The flavour has some malts and butterscotch (diacetyl), moderately sweet, and very moderate hops. Rubbery finish. Soft mouthfeel. Could have been worse.
