First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA

Not too impressed with this one, especially after having a Southern Tier Pumking right before it. This beer was served in a nonic, a clear, dark burnt orange color, with a small but sturdy beige head. Smell was decent and inviting, with scents of toasted bread, caramel malts and pumpkin. The taste was, hmm, not that great, quite frankly. A bit harsh and metallic right up front, nutty, bready, and a little bitter, some mellow yeast notes, with some bready pumpkin taste following, and a touch of earthy hops in the finish. A little bland and off-centered overall. Medium mouthfeel, somewhat harsh as previously mentioned; one glass was plenty for this one.

(And it didn't help that a patron next to me ordered it and pronounced it "ITCH-a-bod.")

Picked up a growler at the brewery in Chambersburg.

Good color and aroma. Belgiany yeast comes through and makes the initial flavors fruity along with the pumpkin pie spice. It is not too heavy though.
After you swallow, then the earthiness of the pumpkin comes through. An awesome execution of an autumn seasonal. Clean and refreshing. Mouthfeel could be a little thicker, but that is a personal thing.

On tap at The Institute as part of their "Pumpkin Patch" event...

Cloudy, orange color with hints of amber. Frothy white head. Smell is of mild belgian yeasts, fall spices (clove and nutmeg), slightly herbal. Taste follows the smell, but comes across as weak - mild flavors all around with nothing domination. No real notes of pumpkin. Thinner, watery body, needs more carbonation. As a pumpkin ale, it suffers from lack of pumpkiny flavors.

Appearance - Pours a lovely, cloudy apricot color with a inch and a half head. The head dissipates quickly, leaving some decent lacing.

Smell - Roasted pumpkin, toasted malt, apples, clove, cinnamon, and sugar cookies. Some spicy alcohol aromas mixed with a nice black pepper aroma come through in the end. The spiciness becomes more prevalent as the beer warms. Basically, everything you'd expect from a Pumpkin Ale with the addition of the esters and phenols of Belgian yeast.

Taste - A nice clove/cinnamon, and pumpkin flavor up front followed by a toasted malt flavor. Pumpkin, spice, black pepper, and alcohol all rear their heads during and after the swallow. This produces a nice spicy finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium texture with a mid-level of carbonation. This Ale has a silky smooth feel on the tongue.

Drinkability/Overall - One hell of a Belgian Pale/Pumpkin Ale. The Belgian yeast worked perfectly in this beer. The fruitiness and spiciness that it provided, made this beer a joy to drink. Spice and pumpkin flavors were well balanced and I never felt like I was drinking a "spice rack bomb." I didn't feel like I needed to take a trip to the dentist's office after drinking this beer either. Bottom-line: This is a great beer. Cheers!
